Fall is here, but winter isn’t far behind. The arrival of crisper air and falling leaves means that it’s time to begin fall land clearing to prepare for the long winter.
The right tools make any job easier and less stressful; that’s why it’s important to know which implements and attachments work best for fall land-clearing tasks. If you have a utility tractor that needs a brand-new implement to effectively clear your land, then keep reading! We have a great list of our top five implements to help you reclaim overgrown fields and more in Texas.

Rotary Cutters

Rotary cutters, also known as brush hogs, are your new best friend when it comes to clearing out heavy vegetation. Rotary cutters can handle thick brush, saplings that are up to 2 to 3 inches in diameter, and dense grass that would normally bog down a regular lawn mower. Most rotary cutters come with heavy-duty blades and a strong, durable deck that will make quick work of any fields that have been neglected for years.
Fall is the best time to cut back vegetation because it’s already dying back during this time. There is also less sap in woody plants and trees that can gum up your machines. We highly recommend a rotary cutter as the first line of offense for your overgrown field.
Landscape Rakes
Landscape rakes use metal tines to scrape across the ground and remove any loose vegetation. They’re great for using after you’ve knocked down the big stuff with a rotary cutter. Landscape rakes can pull up small stumps, roots, and rocks that could mess up the future seasonal plans you have for the land. The grapples on the rakes are also great for moving debris like grass cutting or leaves to a burn pile or other disposal area.
Box Blades
If you’re preparing your land for future seeding, then you’ll need to break up any compacted or old soil. A box blade is a simple but effective implement that attaches to the back of your tractor and allows you to scrape the old soil and break up any tough areas. It can also remove large objects like rocks or roots. A box blade is an indispensable tool for preparing ground that would otherwise be tougher to manage with larger tillage tools, such as a disk harrow.
Disk Harrows
Disk harrows are great tilling implements that can help break up very tough soil that other implements, like a box blade or landscape rake, just can’t penetrate. These are invaluable implements if you have plans for leveling or field production. After you initially clear the debris off your land, you can use a disk harrow to break up the soil. They are also great for incorporating more organic matter into your soil, as the many rotating disks efficiently spread and integrate the organic matter evenly in the soil. If you’re looking to remove old debris and small saplings, a disk harrow can chop up unwanted vegetation and incorporate it into your soil as well.
Pull-Type Aerators
Soil compaction can limit root growth and water absorption, especially after a busy summer or periods of heavy equipment traffic. A pull-type aerator attaches to your tractor drawbar and uses weighted tines to perforate the ground at consistent depths. These openings allow oxygen, moisture, and nutrients to reach plant roots more effectively. Whether preparing pastures, lawns, or food plots, aerating in the fall promotes improved drainage and soil health ahead of next season’s planting.
Front-end Loaders and Grapples

Front-end loaders and grapples are crucial for moving brush piles, logs, and debris away from your land. The grapple attachment gives you the grip you need to handle large and irregularly sized loads without everything sliding off. If you have lots of fallen trees, stumps, or branches around your property, then a front-end loader or a grapple is going to help you get the land cleared quickly and efficiently.
The key to any of these implements is to make sure you match your tractor’s horsepower to the implement size, as well as the correct PTO (power take-off horsepower) with your tractor’s capabilities. PTO is especially important to remember with certain implements like rotary cutters, as the proper PTO allows the implement to operate at its peak capabilities.
